The pilot systems for managed recharge through soil-aquifer treatment (SAT) located at wastewater treatment plant (EDAR, by its acronym in Spanish) facilities consist of six replicas designed and constructed to investigate water quality improvement using this technique and the parameters involved in such improvement. The systems are modularly designed to facilitate the replacement of their components (aquifer recharge fill, reactive barriers in the recharge zone, presence of plants). Each system has 13 observation and sampling points, as well as devices for continuous measurement of temperature, water column (such as pressure), and electrical conductivity. Inlet flows are controlled by dosing pumps. Both the inlet and outlet flows of each system are recorded using electromagnetic flow meters. Each system is operated individually to assess the role of operational parameters in system efficiency.
