Maria-Sofia Kapiri

Description

Maria-Sofia Kapiri was born in Athens, Greece, in 1997. She is a geologist and geo-environmentalist with a strong focus on palaeoceanography and palaeoclimatology. She obtained her MSc in Micropalaeontology-Geobiology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and her BSc in Geology and Geoenvironment from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). Maria-Sofia has gained significant research experience at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and Instituto de Diagnóstico Ambiental y Estudios del Agua (IDAEA), CSIC, focusing on bioindicators of organic pollution and organic indices in sedimentary organic matter. Starting in September 2024, she will pursue her PhD at IDAEA-CSIC, supported by the ''la Caixa'' Foundation fellowship and supervised by Dr. Belen Martrat and Dr. Aurelio Tobias. Her PhD research, part of the IBCC-Shack project (PI: Dr. Belen Martrat), focusing on understanding present and past climate variations in the Iberian region to improve future projections. Maria-Sofia's tasks within the IBCC-Shack imply analysing palaeoenvironmental archives to record extreme climate events, low-likelihood anomalies and abrupt changes, essential for validating and adjusting current climate change simulations.
