Researcher Joan Grimalt receives the Narcís Monturiol Medal for Scientific and Technological Merit. | Joan Grimalt

Dr. Joan Grimalt, researcher and former director of the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC), has been awarded the Narcís Monturiol Medal for Scientific and Technological Merit. This award, granted by the Government of Catalonia, honours his career in the study of organic pollutants and their impact on the environment and human health.

Dr. Grimalt, a chemical engineer with a PhD in Chemical Sciences, has dedicated his career to investigating how organic compounds, both natural and human-derived, can serve as indicators of environmental and climatic changes. His research has had a direct impact on ecosystem restoration, such as the Flix reservoir on the Ebro River, where it contributed to the removal of 700,000 tonnes of waste with high concentrations of pollutants. Throughout his career, he has received prestigious awards, including the King Jaime I Award for Nature Protection (2005) and the Scientific Excellence Award from the Catalan Society of Chemistry (2022).

The Narcis Monturiol award also highlights the work carried out at IDAEA in studying air, water, and soil pollution and its effects on ecosystems and human health. The institute is committed to understanding and mitigating the impacts of pollution through rigorous and applied scientific research.
