The National Water Board held on 26th June | Aigua és Vida

After the Social Summit for the Drought, held last May in Girona, in which IDAEA researchers Enric Vázquez-Suñé and Marc Teixidó participated, the entities Aigua és Vida, Plataforma en Defensa de l’Ebre, Ecologistes en Acció, Ecologistes de Catalunya and Grup de Defensa del Ter met with the president of the Generalitat on 26th June in a National Water Board to present the Proposals to Face the Drought and Water Scarcity in Catalonia to the Catalan Government.

The predictions of Climate Change point to a reduction in water availability. According to the entities, a new hydric model is necessary to change water consumption.

The document presented, signed by 26 entities, includes 6 main proposals:

  • Improve and strengthen the Special Drought Plan of the Catalan Water Agency
  • Contain and reduce the demand for water and guarantee ecological flows
  • Protect water bodies from pollution from intensive industrial and livestock activities
  • Diversification of measures, not only going through the commitment to desalination and regeneration, and put into play the use of alternative water resources such as rainwater and greywater
  • Protect the right to access water for everyone
  • Establish a new model of public and community management and governance of water that ensures public and common interests.

The board was made up of local and social organizations, and research groups to create working groups and constitute a National Water Pact in 2024.
