The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) has received funding from Pla Clima 2022 of the Barcelona City Council to lead the project “Fes el canvi, Be Plastic Free”. This citizen science project, led by IDAEA-CSIC in collaboration with Escola Solc and Zero Waste BCN, aims at evaluating and raising awareness about the human exposure to chemical compounds added to plastics, the plasticizers.
With the participation of students from the Escola Solc aged 12 to 16 years old, “Be Plastic Free” will evaluate the quantity of plasticizers incorporated into the students’ bodies by using a bracelet for 24 hours and taking a urine sample.
The researchers Ethel Eljarrat and Sandra Callejas, from the ONHEALTH group, will analyse the samples at the IDAEA-CSIC facilities. Once the results are obtained, several workshops will be conducted by Zero Waste BCN to learn how to reduce the exposure to plasticizers on a daily basis. The students will not only analyse their own data but will also contribute to co-create the activities and dynamics to teach other students from the same institute how to reduce the use of plastic materials.
