SUMMARY:Joan Grimalt in the "IDAEA weekly seminar series"
DESCRIPTION:Ponent: Joan Grimalt\nTítol: Com afecta el canvi climàtic a la sequera?\nDepartment: Environmental Chemistry\nData: 8 Febrer 2024\nHora: 12:00 pm.\nLloc: Sala d’Actes\nDuració: 45 minuts \nAbstract: \nNo sabem per on anirà l’escalfament global que vivim com a conseqüència de l’activitat humana.

SUMMARY:Xavier Querol in the "IDAEA weekly seminar series"

SUMMARY:Victor Matamoros al Café Prismàtic 2023

SUMMARY:Professor Roy M. Harrison in the "IDAEA weekly seminar series"
DESCRIPTION:Invited speaker: Professor Roy M. Harrison\, from the University of Birmingham and member of the IDAEA’s External Scientific Advisory Committee\nTitle: Studies of airborne ultrafine particles in polluted atmospheres\nDate: 11th July 2023\nTime: 11:30 pm.\nVenue: Sala d’Actes IDAEA-CSIC. The talk will be also streamed online:\nLink to the talk \nLength: Long – up to 45min \nAbstract: \nUltrafine particles (UFP)\, also referred to as nanoparticles\, are defined as those with a diameter <100nm.  They are a major focus of interest as they dominate the number count of particles in the atmosphere\, and there is some\, albeit limited\, evidence for toxicity independent of the larger particles which account for most particle mass.  A brief introduction to ultrafine particles will be given to place the topic in context.  This will move on to studies of UFP in diesel engine exhaust and the roadside atmosphere\, where both solid graphitic particles\, and liquid particles comprised mainly of condensed lubricating oil are observed.  Numerical models have been developed which simulate these particles in the urban atmosphere at resolution down to 10 metres. Recent work shows that diesel particle filters have been very effective in removal of the solid particles\, but the liquid particles are largely unaffected as they pass through the filter as vapour\, and condense as the exhaust cools on mixing with ambient air.  Work airside at Heathrow Airport shows high concentrations of UFP\, smaller than the majority of those from road traffic\, and by using a fast response instrument\, plumes from individual aircraft have been quantified.  New particle formation in locations as diverse as Beijing and Antarctica has been a major focus of study\, and comparison of roadside and urban background locations shows that nucleation events are typically less frequent at roadside\, but both new particle numbers and growth rates are greater.  Simulations of new particle formation in Beijing\, where it can contribute significantly to haze formation\, shows that projected emissions reductions will lead to a substantial reduction in new particle formation.

SUMMARY:Indra S. Sen in the "IDAEA weekly seminar series"
DESCRIPTION:Invited speaker: Indra S. Sen\, from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur\nTitle: Tracking the glacier meltwater of “Third Pole” fed rivers in space and time using isotopic tracers\nType of talk: General\nDate: 28th June 2023\nTime: 15.00 pm.\nVenue: Sala d’Actes IDAEA-CSIC\nLength: Long – up to 45min \nAbstract:\nThe “Third Pole” glaciers seasonally melt\, and feed many large river systems in the Indian sub-continent. This talk will utilize stable water isotopes to quantify the glacier ice meltwater fractions in glacier-fed Himalayan rivers to address climate change issues. We estimate 33.5 ±6.5 Gt yr-1 of ice contributions to the “Third-Pole” sourced rivers and quantify the meltwater dependence of many large river systems. I will talk about the challenges of isotopic hydrograph separation studies and the way forward. Finally\, the talk will highlight a few of the ongoing projects focused on new paradigms of water quality monitoring. \nSeminars are open to anyone. SUMMARY:Tomás Aquino in the "IDAEA weekly seminar series"
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Tomás Aquino\nTitle: Stochastics is not Statistics! An introduction to random walk models in hydrogeology\nDepartment: Geosciences\nType of talk: General\nDate: 12th April 2023\nTime: 12.00 pm.\nVenue: Saminari A\nLength: up to 20 minutes\nAbstract: \nStatistical analysis is a familiar and widespread concept. Especially in the age of Big Data and machine learning\, its applicability and usefulness are common knowledge. Stochastic modeling\, however\, is less well-known. Loosely speaking\, statistical methods aim to characterize the variability in a population or system\, or to extract information from large data sets. Stochastic methods\, on the other hand\, generally aim to derive dynamical models for the evolution of a system subject to incomplete information. One of the key concepts behind stochastic approaches is the derivation of deterministic models despite small-scale uncertainty. A paradigm of this idea is Einstein’s original Brownian motion model in terms of a random walk. In hydrogeology\, multi-scale heterogeneity from the pore to the field scale in aquifers and other natural systems makes stochastic approaches powerful tools for deriving theoretical and numerical approaches to model large-scale phenomena\, such as contaminant fate and transport or nutrient cycles. In this talk\, I will give a brief introduction to random walk methods and their application to transport and reaction processes in hydrogeology\, with an emphasis on conceptual understanding rather than mathematical rigor. This will lead us to explore the relationships between the apparently-disparate concepts of solute transport and reaction\, the central limit theorem and differentiation\, and their generalizations in the presence of multi-scale heterogeneity. \nSeminars are open to anyone. Punctuality is much appreciated since the seminars start at 12.00 p.m. sharp.
