Summary

The pilot managed aquifer recharge systems using soil-aquifer treatment (SAT), located at the facilities of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), consist of six replicate systems designed and built to investigate water quality improvement through this technique and the role of the parameters involved. The systems have been designed in a modular way to facilitate the replacement of their components (aquifer filling material, reactive barriers, presence of plants, etc.). The SAT systems are fed with secondary effluent from the WWTP.

Each system has 13 observation and sampling points, as well as devices for the continuous measurement of temperature, water column pressure and electrical conductivity. Inflow rates are controlled by dosing pumps. Both the inlet and outlet volumes of each system are recorded using electromagnetic flowmeters. Each system is operated independently, allowing the influence of different operational parameters on system efficiency to be evaluated.
