Summary

Expanding population, urban sprawl, and the effects of climate change are forcing water-stressed cities to seek new sources of potable water. Green Infrastructures, like Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDs), can capture, treat, and infiltrate urban runoff, while providing flood risk mitigation, along with other crucial environmental and societal co-benefits. As contaminants in stormwater –like metals and overlooked persistent and mobile organic compounds (PMOCs)1,2– raise concerns regarding these practices, assessment and removal capacity improvement of these existing nature-based engineered technologies are essential to secure our local drinking water supplies.
