Research on flow in porous media has mainly targeted incompressible fluids. However, many important processes involve compressible gases, which significantly alter fluid behaviour. Despite this, the physics of compressible multiphase flow remains largely unexplored. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the COMPRESS project will develop a predictive framework for compressible displacements in porous media, linking pore-scale physics to reservoir-scale models. Through laboratory micromodel experiments and simulations, it will examine how compressibility interacts with viscosity, capillarity, and wettability to affect invasion dynamics. These insights will lead to new models that explicitly incorporate compressibility, enabling the prediction of interface propagation and destabilisation in heterogeneous rocks. The findings are set to enhance Europe’s leadership in porous media science.
