Summary

By characterizing the chemical exposome in pregnancy and early-life and assessing its effects on maternal-infant microbiome and resistome development, the project addresses key challenges identified in these priority areas, including the need to monitor emerging contaminants, understand their biological effects and support policies aimed at reducing environmental health risks. Specifically, CHEM-BIOME uses advanced high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and metagenomics approaches to quantify a wide range of organic pollutants, many of them linked to consumer products and food packaging, and through metagenomics it evaluates how these exposures affect the maternal-infant development of the microbiome and resistome.
The project follows a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to assess the impact of the chemical exposome on maternal-infant microbiome and resistome development from pregnancy to early-life, combining expertise in exposomics, microbiology, epidemiology and clinical translation.
