The main objective of this project is to increase the current understanding of the risk of complex mixtures of persistent pollutants in surface water and wastewater samples, focusing in their neurotoxic potential and applying an effect-directed analysis (EDA) methodology. For EDA, surface water and wastewater samples will be extracted and pre-concentrated by using solid phase extraction (SPE) and a homemade multilayer mixed-bed cartridge with four different specific absorbents as weak anion and cation exchangers (WAX and WCX), Oasis HLB commonly used for wide-scope screening, and Bond Elut PPL to retain even the most polar classes of analytes.
