Carmen obtained her BSc in Chemistry from the University of Barcelona in 1998 and completed her PhD at the same institution in 2003, within the Environmental and Product Engineering doctoral program. Since then, she has developed an extensive career in environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, and environmental forensics. She is currently Technical Director of the Marine Geochemistry Laboratory (LGOM) at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC), where she leads an ENAC-accredited analytical service specialized in the forensic characterization of oil spills and chemical discharges. Her work focuses on the identification of pollution sources through accredited analytical methodologies and the determination of the chemical fingerprint of marine oil spills. Her research interests include marine pollution, environmental forensics, antibiotics, and emerging contaminants in different environmental matrices, as well as quality management under ISO 17025.
