Summary

Haiqing Wu is a Juan de la Cierva Researcher at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research, Spanish National Research Council (IDAEA-CSIC, Spain). He obtained his Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering at the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (IRSM-UCAS, China) and his PhD degree in Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC, Spain). He did his PhD with a competitive scholarship (FI-2019) funded by Catalonia government.

Before joining IDAEA, he secured a postdoctoral position at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies, Spanish National Research Council (IMEDEA-CSIC) and the Institute of Marine Sciences, Spanish National Research Council (ICM-CSIC).

His research focuses on understanding and managing fluid-induced seismicity associated with geo-energy engineering like geothermal energy exploitation, geological carbon storage, and subsurface energy storage that contributes to energy transition from the conventional fossil fuels to the unconventional and sustainable geo-energies to reach carbon neutrality to mitigate climate change. In particular, he is interested in (1) the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) coupling processes occurring in porous media (geomaterials) during and after fluid injection into the subsurface, and how the THM perturbation affects the site/fault stability; (2) the fault dynamic rupture evolution (earthquake nucleation process) after fault reactivation; (3) the scaling law between the earthquake magnitude and the fluid injection parameters and/or subsurface properties; and (4) developing fast tools to assess and manage the risk of induced seismicity. He has developed mathematical models and stochastic poromechanical framework to assess fault instability and dynamic rupture evolution, and thus, the risk of induced seismicity.
