Jessica Subirats Medina

Postdoc Researcher

Summary

Jessica Subirats is an expert in environmental microbiology and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and a postdoctoral researcher at IDAEA-CSIC, where she has conducted her research since 2021 through several competitive postdoctoral fellowships, including Juan de la Cierva, Beatriu de Pinós, and Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowships. She has recently been awarded a Ramón y Cajal fellowship and holds the R3 certificate.

Her research focuses on understanding and mitigating antimicrobial resistance at the environment–human interface from a One Health perspective. Her main research lines include:

  • AMR and One Health: understanding the environmental dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and resistance genes and their potential transmission to humans, particularly through agriculture and the food chain.
  • Reclaimed water and AMR surveillance: developing sentinel indicators and monitoring strategies for AMR in reclaimed water to support European water reuse regulations and AMR monitoring frameworks.
  • Safe circular economy: evaluating and mitigating AMR risks associated with circular practices such as water reuse and the recycling of organic residues in agriculture, with the ultimate goal of protecting environmental and human health.
