Summary

I am an expert in mass spectrometry-based exposomics and metabolomics, with a strong focus on the detection and interpretation of xenobiotics in biological and environmental samples. My research combines liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC) coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) with targeted, suspect and non-target approaches.

A key component of my current work is the development and application of bioinformatic workflows for large-scale HRMS data processing, feature detection, spectral annotation, prioritization of unknown compounds and integration of chemical exposure profiles with biological information.

My research is currently focused on characterizing human and environmental exposure to xenobiotics across different matrices, including human tissues and biofluids as well as marine biological samples, and on investigating how these exposures may be associated with metabolic alterations and adverse health outcomes.

The Expo-Hum group

Humans are continuously exposed to complex mixtures of chemicals through multiple environmental, dietary and lifestyle-related pathways. However, major knowledge gaps remain regarding the identity of these exposures, their combined effects and their potential impact on human health.

We apply advanced analytical chemistry, high-resolution mass spectrometry and bioinformatics to obtain a more comprehensive characterization of the human chemical exposome. Our work includes targeted, suspect and non-target screening, retrospective HRMS data analysis and the development of computational strategies for chemical annotation and prioritization.

We aim to link internal chemical exposure with biological responses by combining exposomics and metabolomics, investigating alterations in metabolic pathways and evaluating associations with adverse health outcomes in collaboration with epidemiologists. We also develop early-warning and prioritization strategies to identify emerging chemicals that may represent a potential threat to human health.
