Increasing pressures on water resources, including droughts, floods, overexploitation and contamination, require a sound understanding of surface and groundwater dynamics. This understanding is challenged by the spatial heterogeneity of natural media across scales, from pores to catchments, and by the complexity and nonlinearity of coupled flow, transport and reaction processes in groundwater aquifers, rivers, and the critical zone. We develop predictive frameworks and multiscale models to support climate-resilient water management and sustainable groundwater protection.

To this end, we combine fundamental and applied research through theory development, detailed numerical simulations, field experiments, and laboratory monitoring.

Two current ERC-funded projects provide a strong foundation for advancing the quantitative understanding of flow, transport, mixing, and reactive processes in karst aquifers.
