Geostorage and geoenergy
This research line develops quantitative frameworks and simulation tools to support safe and efficient subsurface technologies for climate-change mitigation and the energy transition, such as geological storage of CO2 and radioactive waste, underground hydrogen storage, and geothermal energy systems.

- Hydrogeosciences
Geostorage and geoenergy are cornerstones in the effort to mitigate and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Geological carbon dioxide storage is a key strategy to remove CO2 from the atmosphere by injecting it into deep geological formations, where it is permanently stored through structural and residual trapping, as well as solubility and mineral trapping.
The energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources relies on the use of geological resources in two main ways. On the one hand, the subsurface provides large storage capacity for energy, particularly in the form of hydrogen in aquifers and depleted gas fields, helping to buffer fluctuations in renewable energy production such as wind and solar. On the other hand, geothermal energy offers a renewable, low-carbon baseload power source that is crucial for grid stability.
To this end, we combine frontier fundamental research with applied numerical modelling and reservoir engineering approaches to develop predictive tools for subsurface energy systems. We integrate hydrogeology, geomechanics, reactive transport, and machine-learning to improve the efficiency, safety, and long-term reliability of geoenergy and geostorage technologies.
