Summary

I received my PhD in Chemistry with cum laude honors from the University of Barcelona in December 2012. I was an international pioneer in the research of perfluoroalkyl substances in the environment and their impact on humans through diet, while also being a Marie Curie short-stay fellow within the “Environmental Chemoinformatic – Initial Training Network (eco-itn)” framework. My doctoral thesis was awarded best thesis of the Department of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Barcelona for the 2012–2013 academic year. Since then, I have participated in the study and development of new methodologies for analyzing emerging contaminants in food and the environment.

In 2016, I rejoined IDAEA-CSIC with a Juan de la Cierva Incorporación postdoctoral fellowship (IJCI-2014-21736). In February 2022, I secured a research position at IDAEA-CSIC within the ON-HEALTH group, and since December 2023, I have been a Tenured Scientist (Científica Titular) in the same group. Concurrently, in December 2022, I was awarded the I3 Certificate for research track record. In February 2025, I was appointed co-director of the Laboratory of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs Lab) at IDAEA-CSIC.

Currently, I study the presence and impact of emerging contaminants in the environment—including fossil- and bio-based micro- and nanoplastics, pharmaceuticals, fluorinated compounds, endocrine disruptors, plastic additives, and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as dioxins and related compounds—as well as their potential entry into the food web. My research has been carried out through participation in national, European, and international projects over the years.

Since 2008, this research has generated more than 90 scientific articles in first-quartile (Q1) SCI journals and 9 book chapters, and I have presented at numerous national and international conferences through oral communications and poster presentations. According to Scopus, my publications have been cited over 5,900 times, resulting in an h-index of 43 (2008–2026). Furthermore, my research has achieved significant media coverage.

Throughout my research career, I have supervised undergraduate final-year students and master’s students, as well as directed several PhD theses.
